Sarona is the first neigborhood in Tel Aviv outside of Old Jaffa. Sarona was founded and built by German Templar settlers in the 1880s. For decades, after its residents left due to the creation of the Jewish state in 1948 (and the Templars support for Hitler and Nazi Germany), the compound was used as a top secret base for the Israeli security services. Then in the early 2010s, its iconic homes were converted into shops and the entire compound was transformed into an entertainment district. Today Sarona is a thriving neighborhood packed with shops and restaurants, with construction of skyscrapers continuing among the preserved german colony homes.
